They add hours of relaxing enjoyment as we sit and watch the underwater wonders swim around gracefully all day long. However, starting and maintaining an aquarium can be very expensive. This is the main reason why many people do not want to set up a real aquarium. However, one no longer has to set up a real fish aquarium to enjoy all of the beauties the underwater world has to offer. Now, one can simply sit back and watch a virtual aquarium.

What In The World Is A Virtual Aquarium?

A virtual aquarium is like no other aquarium. It is a program that one can install or download on their home or work computer. With a virtual aquarium, the user can decide on which type of tank, fish and decorations that they want to include. They have the option of choosing a set up that is already available or creating their own set up. A virtual aquarium is a fun way to enjoy all of the beauties and splendors of a regular fish tank without having the real life hassle of maintaining and caring for the fish.

Where Can I Get A Virtual Aquarium?

There are many websites on the Internet where one can purchase a virtual aquarium for their computer systems. Some of these sites offer screensavers, clip arts and more. The Internet is the best place to look for computer-generated aquariums. There are also computer software programs that you can purchase in most stores where software are sold. Virtual aquariums that are sold in software formats are usually virtual games. This means that the user has to set them up and maintain them virtually. It provides hours of relaxing and enjoyable fun. One can get a computer-generated aquarium for their cell phones also.

Why Is A Virtual Aquarium Better Than A Real Aquarium?

The main reason is because a virtual aquarium can be ignored and a real aquarium cannot be ignored. A real aquarium requires real care and maintenance. A real one will also cost real money to maintain it. With a computer-generated aquarium, one can walk away and if the fish die, all you have to do is click reset and start over. There are no supplies to buy for this type of aquarium. Above all, a virtual aquarium can help teach you about what it is like to care for fish and this could help you decide if you want a real fish tank or not.

types of aquarium sharks

Types Of Aquarium Sharks For Your Home Tank

When you go to a public aquarium like the National Aquarium in Baltimore, one of the big draws is always the big sharks. Species like the Great White, Hammerhead and Bull sharks are bone chillingly awesome. But can you keep sharks in your home aquarium? They won’t be as big, but there are some types of aquarium sharks you can keep.

Red Tail Sharks

This is the most common type of aquarium shark that you can find. There is some debate from hobbyists as to Red tailed Sharks being actual members of the shark family. Some say they are really members of the catfish family, especially since they have whiskers (called barbells) and only grow to be four of five inches long.

They are streamlined, strong swimmers and can sometimes be aggressive with other fish, so a lot people consider them sharks. You definitely need a lid on your tank as they like to jump. They are freshwater fish, which are the easiest kinds of fish to care for. Some people have had success keeping this type of aquarium shark with other tropical fish.

Bala Sharks

This type of aquarium shark is more "shark-like" and grows to about seven inches long. They really need to be housed with just their own kind, as they are aggressive. They also like to jump and need a heavy lid on their tank. They grow fast, so you need to already have a large enough tank to hold the adults. They are silvery with black tipped fins.

Apollo Sharks

This is another of the types of aquarium sharks that are not considered true sharks by some hobbyists. They are silver, sleek and strong swimmers that prefer to hang out in schools of their own kind. They are much less aggressive than either Bala or Red Tailed Sharks. But, they grow to be about eight inches long.

Black Shark

This type of aquarium shark is a bigger, all black variety of Red Tailed Shark. Occasionally, they come in albino, which kind of makes the name rather confusing. No matter what you call them, they get to be big – averaging ten inches in length. They also have whiskers and prefer to feed on the bottom of the tank like catfish or Red Tailed Sharks.

They behave more unpredictably than all of the other types of aquarium sharks mentioned. One shark will tolerate all kinds of fish in his tank while another will hunt and eat any fish that dares to share his tank.

turtle aquarium

Setting Up A Turtle Aquarium

When people think about an aquarium, they usually think about tropical fish or saltwater fish. However, aquariums are not just for fish. A turtle aquarium is a really neat thing to have in one’s home. Not only are they fun to watch, they are also very educational to care for and clean. Setting up an aquarium is not always easy. It takes a lot of steps that are important to the turtle’s health and well-being. Here are a few steps on how to set up the perfect turtle aquarium.

Choose The Right Aquarium

When choosing a turtle aquarium, one must think about what type of turtle will be living in the aquarium. Most turtles can live comfortable in a 20-gallon tank or larger. If you are unsure about which aquarium size would be most appropriate, you should do some research on the type of turtle that you want and see what its adult size is going to be. Once you know this, then you can decide on which size turtle aquarium you will need.

Interior Turtle Design

There are a few things that a turtle will need inside their turtle aquarium to be comfortable. Some turtles like water. So, if you have a water turtle, you will need to have a turtle aquarium that is part water and part land. In this case, fill the tank half full of water. Then place some rocks and sticks that come up above the water so that the turtle has a place to come and sit out of the water. You will also need a heat light and food bowls to get started.

If you have a land turtle, you will not need to add swimming water to the turtle aquarium. You should line the bottom of the turtle aquarium with some outdoor carpet. You can add a heat rock or a heat light and some food bowls. Make sure the turtle has enough room to walk around the turtle aquarium. You can also add a stick or other rocks, but do not add things that are too high. The other decorations should be things the turtle can put his feet on, not really to climb on.

A turtle aquarium is a fun and exciting hobby and it is a nice addition to any home. Having a pet turtle is very rewarding in many ways. It is fun to watch and care for any type of turtle. If you have water turtles, your turtle aquarium will require more frequent cleaning. Land turtles tend to be messier with their foods. Each turtle has its own characteristics. Therefore, you need to pay close attention to how you set up your turtle aquarium.

tropical fish aquarium

The Tropical Fish Aquarium Ecosystem

When you talk about having an aquarium, a tropical fish aquarium is the kinds of aquarium people automatically think you have, even though you may have a freshwater aquarium, reef aquarium or some other kind of aquarium.

Choice Of Aquarium

When deciding among different aquariums that you want, consider how much time you have to devote to caring for your fish and your aquarium. Generally speaking, with every tropical fish aquarium, you must manage the filtration, temperature and chemical makeup of the environment in the aquarium. Generally speaking, a saltwater aquarium is more complicated to operate than a freshwater aquarium, because of the complexity in testing and adjusting the levels of salinity in the water.

Saltwater Tropical Fish Aquarium

If you are willing to take the time, expense and effort to operate a saltwater tropical fish aquarium, you will be handsomely rewarded with a color diversity of sea life. Combine a reef, or living rock aquarium with tropical fish and a number of species are suited for reef life.

Some of the most popular, beautiful and fascinating tropical fish species are the colorful, exotic clown fish, damselfish and angelfish, normal size or dwarf. Coral, crustaceans and sea anemones will complete your tropical fish aquarium ecosystem.

If these species thrive in your tropical fish aquarium, then you may have a natural knack for raising tropical fish. At that point, you may wish to add more complicated, harder to care for species to your ecosystem, like jellyfish, squid and octopus.

Don't Forget The Snails

Whatever kind of fish you decide to put in your tropical fish aquarium be sure to include a snail or two. Snails are gastropods with tiny tentacled heads. Not only do they entertain, they keep the aquarium clean, as they cruise the gravel on the bottom of the tank, eating dead and decaying plant and animal matter.

One or two snails are usually enough for any size aquarium, because snails reproduce prolifically. They are hermaphroditic, and as such are capable of self-reproduction. Don't be alarmed if there is one snail in the tank one day, and there are two snails in the tank a few days later. Some snails can fertilize their own eggs while others self-reproduce using other methods. If you suspect your snail is laying eggs, you may be able to spot them, in a gelatinous mass around the base of a rocky or shadowy, protected area of the tropical fish aquarium.

: small aquarium sharks

Two Popular Types Of Small Aquarium Sharks

When people set up an aquarium, they soon find out that there are hundreds of tropical fish to choose from. There are community fish such as guarmis and tetras and there are aggressive fish such as Oscars and cichlids. However, one of the most popular aquarium fishes today is a small aquarium shark. Here is some useful information on small aquarium sharks and how to care for and maintain them in your home aquarium.

The Epaulette Shark

The Epaulette shark is usually a white shark with brown spots all over their bodies. They are the most ideal small aquarium sharks because they prefer to live in confined spaces. They do not swim around the tank like most other sharks. They simply swim around the tank floor all day looking for food. They are very slender and may resemble an eel at times. Their slender bodies allow them to slip around rocks and other aquarium decorations.

One thing to remember abut the Epaulette shark is that they will grow larger. An adult will grow to about eleven inches long. So, although they are not the smallest of the small aquarium sharks, they are also not the largest. One needs to make sure they have plenty of room to move around the tank.

The Epaulette shark feeds mostly on small crabs and worms. They may even eat shrimp and other small fishes. They have very small teeth, so larger pieces of food should be avoided. They can bite and chew, but their teeth are not designed to cut the food. So, keep their food pieces small at all times.

The Red Tail Shark

One of the most popular small aquarium sharks is the red tail shark. This is a semi-aggressive fish that adds a unique beauty to any tank. They usually have a solid black body and red tail and are very easy to identify. It is recommended that you only keep one red tail shark per tank because they do not like to live with their own kind.

You must always provide a red tail shark with a nice hiding place. They like to hide to feel secure and safe. They are aggressive fish and they will pick on other fish, so they need some room to get away from things. Therefore, you will need to provide them with an adequate hiding place.

Red tail sharks like to go along the bottom of the tank looking for food. They will usually eat most fish flakes, live food or other foods that drop to the bottom of the tank. They should be fed at least once per day.

The Epaulette shark and the Red Tail shark are two of the most popular small aquarium sharks available. There are hundred of types of sharks, but these are the two most popular ones usually found in pet stores. Having a small aquarium shark is an awesome addition to any aquarium. However, it is recommended that you do some research on them before buying them. They are not like other fish. They usually require their own specialized care and maintenance.

saltwater aquarium fish

Why I Will Never Keep Saltwater Aquarium Fish

I have nothing against saltwater aquarium fish – in fact, I quite admire them. They are incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring. Learning about saltwater aquarium fish is a little like learning about life on another planet, as their way of life is so incredibly different from ours. Their fascinating behaviors, as well as their beauty have made them increasingly popular among aquarists. But you won’t catch me keeping them as pets.

Depleting The World's Oceans

Scientific studies of the world's oceans are getting grimmer with each new report. The seemingly impossible is happening – the seas are running out of fish. Although most of these disappearing fish stocks are due to commercial fishing and pollution, for some species, the culprit has been the pet fish trade.

Have you ever stopped to think where the fish in pet stores come from? For most freshwater fish, they come from captive-bred stocks that have lived all of their lives in tanks or other man-made environments that they have grown used to. All types of aquarium goldfish are all domesticated fish, for example.

But this is not the case for saltwater aquarium fish that enter the pet trade. They have captured as babies or as adults from the ocean, slapped in a bucket and then shipped thousands of miles to live in artificial environments that usually cannot keep their tank water healthy enough for them to survive. Over 50% of all ocean-captured fish die before reaching the pet store. And that's even before they're sold to people who might not have a clue as to how to take care of them.

And Then, The Money Factor

Although the filtration and water circulation systems have greatly improved for the keeping of saltwater fish in the last dozen or so years, one other important factor keeps me from ever keeping saltwater aquarium fish – money. A common baby goldfish averages about fifteen cents (US), while a clown fish costs hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the fish.

Saltwater aquarium fish need a large investment of your time, energy and especially your money. You need specialized food, water chemistry sets, filters, sump pumps, overflow boxes and water chillers (as opposed to water heaters). Because not much is known about the proper care and feeding of saltwater fish, you need to do a lot of personal research and experimentation on your own time in order to try and keep even one of these fish alive.

saltwater aquarium

A Saltwater Aquarium: The Beauty Of A Reef

When most people think of aquariums they think of beautiful, colorful creations, like the aquariums in museums or at fancy restaurants. Tanks full of luscious plants, sunken ships, castles and fish of all colors, sizes, shapes and designs. In fish stores, there are endless tanks of endless species, some striped, others solid, but most of them beautiful. However, most people do not know that there is a difference between a freshwater aquarium and a saltwater aquarium, a very integral difference that decides which fish and plant life can be used in which tank. Saltwater tanks are on the brink of new discoveries every day. Synthetic salt mixes and lighting systems, filtration sets and specialized chemicals all help to create an aquarium as natural as the ocean itself. Even the act of diving and the exploration of the seas have resulted in the capturing of new fish species that can also be introduced to a tank at home.

As Different As Salt And Pepper

A saltwater aquarium is simply that—saltwater. Therefore, it is a better replication of the ocean itself. These tanks offer the most beautiful fish and crustaceans, flourishing plant life and living, breathing coral reefs. Freshwater aquariums are more limited in what they can offer, and for the most part, the colorful fish that grab attention require saltwater systems. A saltwater aquarium is a little harder to set-up and maintain, but it consists of most of the same equipment as its freshwater companion. Planning any aquarium is hard work, but also fun. From the design of the floor to the types of fish and plants that will be contained within it, every step of the process must be thought out and outlined before it is brought to life. Castles and ships and other fun toys can be added and a coral reef, the true essence of saltwater life, can be included in larger tanks, resulting in endless possibilities of ocean life.

Lighting and plant life is as important to a saltwater aquarium as the fish. Plants help to replicate the natural environments of fish, but there is a reason plants are there to begin with. Plants oxygenate the water and help to filter out bacteria and they also give fish places to hide and nutrients. Lighting is crucial as well, as the wrong balance of light can result in the death of plants and fish and the spread of algae. Lighting in a saltwater aquarium can be controlled to mimic day and night, and can also be filtered to mimic moonlight or other natural occurrences.

reef aquarium

Stocking Your Saltwater Reef Aquarium

Do you know what a reef aquarium is? It's an aquarium that emulates an underwater coral reef ecosystem, containing live corals and other sea animals that thrive in a coral reef environment.

A reef aquarium contains an amazing diversity of color and texture. These animals are sometimes called live rocks. They bring the mystery and spectacle of an undersea garden to homes, offices and shopping centers all over the world.

It's Not About The Fish

With a reef aquarium system, it's not about the fish. Instead, the focus of a reef aquarium is the lifestyle of the live corals and other invertebrates that inhabit the reef tank. A reef aquarium at first looks like any other aquarium; and then you notice that there are no fish swimming around. Invertebrates take a little longer to notice.

Invertebrates

These living creatures make up 97% of all the animals on the planet. The sea invertebrates that you may choose to invite into your aquarium tank include the Bryozoa. This tiny sea animal builds skeletons of calcium, like coral. They are also known as sea mats or moss animals. Bryozoa are found in blades of kelp, wood, rocks, shells and other hard substrates. The species is mostly immobile, but some colonies can creep around a bit.

Crustaceans

Barnacles, crabs and lobsters are all members of the crustacean family. More than 10,000,000 tons of crustaceans were produced and eaten by humans in 2005. Reef aquarium owners prize crustaceans for the appeal they add to a reef aquarium, not for their flavor or protein.

Mollusks

Snails are the most common members of the Mollusk family. They are members of the class Gastropoda and in their adult stage they grow coiled shells. Snails live quite happily in a reef aquarium, and they add a lot of personality to a tank.

The ingredients you need to set up your reef aquarium can be found at any aquarium supply store. A good way to get started is to get a mix of seeded live rock, base rock, some mixed snails and some hermit crabs. Seeded rock will have two or more invertebrates growing on it, such as mushrooms or soft corals.

The best reef aquarium will have a great variety of colors on one rock. Aim for a combination of leather corals, green stars, brown stars, finger coral, zoanthids and mushrooms. In the right environment, these living rocks are easy to propagate, and the beginner can grow a spectacular underground garden, even in a small reef aquarium.

national aquarium

Beautiful Fish Of The Sea At The National Aquarium

The National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland is one of the finest aquariums in the United States. It features more than 16,500 specimens of sea life and more than 600 species of animals. There is so much to explore at this aquarium that it may take more than one day to see it all. But once you come, you will be glad you did.

The National Aquarium features animals and sea creatures from all over the world. The National Aquarium has an Australian animal exhibit which features the animals native to the land down under, as well as special exhibits that show stories of survival in that environment.

Amphibians are also in abundance at the National Aquarium. These are the types of creatures that most people are familiar with and can see in nature. Some of the National Aquarium’s specimens can be found in your own backyard, while others come from all over the world and are very rare.

Besides fish and other sea life, the National Aquarium is also home to birds, mammals and reptiles. Some mammals are also sea dwelling creatures, like the dolphin. The birds that they have at the National Aquarium are land and sea dwelling birds. Some fish right out of the sea for their meals while others look on land.

The National Aquarium is also home to a large collection of invertebrate species. Invertebrates are small animals that do not feature a backbone. Many small sea dwelling creatures fall into this category. Crabs, lobsters and sea cucumbers all fall into this category.

Planning A Trip

If you would like to plan to a trip to the National Aquarium, it is as easy as checking their website for times, dates of special events and news about new exhibits. It is a great place for a family vacation, as well as for couples and anyone who is interested sea life. The website features a trip planner so that making plans for the aquarium’s special events and exhibits is easier than ever.

Baltimore is also a great vacation spot. Once you are done visiting the aquarium, there are many other historical and fun activities to explore in Baltimore. Baltimore is a great town for shopping and it is close to Washington, D.C. If you are thinking about taking a vacation to the east coast, make sure that you make Baltimore your central point. You will not regret making the trip to the National Aquarium.

live aquarium plants

Making Fish Happy: Live Aquarium Plants

To most people an aquarium is a beautiful little world all in its own. Whether the tank is in a restaurant, at a hotel or in the home it provides a stunning look into the world of the ocean, all within a small little piece of equipment. However, aquariums are more complicated than fish. Caring for a tank and creating that beautiful piece of the ocean is a bit more difficult than filling it with water and dropping in a few fish. In fact, rarely when one pictures an aquarium does he or she only picture fish because there are also rocks on the bottom, sunken ships, little castles, shells, reefs and, most importantly, plants.

Aquarium plants serve multiple purposes, and depending on the intention of the owner, different plants can be used. Many beginners use fake plants, especially if they have small tanks with only a few fish. Small bowl-like tanks are not even filtrated so plastic plants, weighted at the bottom, are fine. These plants do provide comfort for the fish, as they feel more at home with natural surroundings. But for larger tanks, especially saltwater aquariums, live aquarium plants are a necessity. Both types of plants provide psychological comfort for the fish, but only live aquarium plants truly benefit the fish physically, and can even mean the difference between a successful tank and a failure.

Breathing In Peace

Live aquarium plants best mimic the natural ocean world. Especially in saltwater tanks, plant life is integral to health of fish, and for the owner it truly makes the tank a beautiful sight. However, live aquarium plants, just like in natural, are the foundation of the ecosystem in the tank. They oxygenate the water and help to filter dangerous bacteria. They prevent the growth of algae by absorbing carbon dioxide in the water, and they can provide hiding places for fish in a way not replicated by plastic plants that do not move in such a fluid way.

Due to the benefits of live aquarium plants owners must take their own health into consideration. Chemicals placed in the water for the benefit of fish must not damage the plants and lighting must be sufficient enough to allow the live aquarium plants to perform photosynthesis. In the end, these plants make the aquarium a healthier place to live, and more fish can be introduced into a tank with flourishing plants than a tank that is barren, especially if that plant life includes coral reefs.

latest reef aquarium science

Latest Reef Aquarium Science: The Nano Reef

Whatever your views on the ethics of keeping salt water fish and other aquatic critters as pets, they are in the mainstream pet market and need to be taken care of. The latest reef aquarium science with advances in filtration, lighting and water chemistry have made the animals living in a tank far happier than just about ten years ago, when most salt water creatures in a tank died. One of the reasons is the nano reef tank.

What Is It?

Nano reef tanks are small salty water aquariums that usually have live coral in them that are 20 gallons are less. (Some hobbyists into the latest reef aquarium science will accept anything up top 40 gallons as a nano reef). Decades ago, if you wanted to keep a reef aquarium, you had to have at least a 50 gallon tank … and thousands of dollars to lose.

What Were The Advances?

Nano reef tanks were not possible until there were advances in fish keeping technology. This was also from zoos and professional aquariums trying to preserve threatened species like seahorses as well as the pet trade. The latest reef aquarium science included better, more compact lighting systems, smaller water agitation and circulation pumps and more efficient filters.

Another advance in the latest reef aquarium science has been that of the development of a more natural sand layer for the bottom of the tank. You just can't use any old sand. You need sand that's going to support the good bacteria that your salt water creatures will need to survive. This special sand for reef aquariums is usually called "live sand".

But one of the most successful discoveries in the latest reef aquarium science that has lead to happier salt water wet pets is the realization that the water has to be kept cold – much colder than for even goldfish. At first, it was difficult to get a tank chiller that could chill and not freeze a tank less than 50 gallons. Now, chillers have been made to work for the small size of nano tanks.

Another advance welcomed by hobbyists as well as professional aquariums is that this technology has gotten cheaper as well as smaller. Ten years ago, you needed at least two thousand US dollars to even think about setting up a salt water tanks. Now, you can set up a decent nano tank for about $300 (not including wet pets).

home aquarium

The Relaxing Benefits Of A Home Aquarium

Studies have proved time and time again that having a pet in your life can make you a happier and healthier person by making you more relaxed. Just watching fish gently glide about in your home aquarium often triggers an almost hypnotic state in the observers. Sales of tapes and DVDs just of a camera taping a normal home aquarium sell very well to help calm the overstressed.

The Sounds

One of the benefits of a home aquarium is not only the sights but the sounds that they make. Many people find the noise of running water to be very soothing; just look at the proliferation of home decorative fountains to see that. There are also many white noise machines that feature reproductions of water noises like rain or waterfall.

Advances in aquarium technology have led to air pumps and filters to become a lot quieter than they were twenty years ago. You can always move an air pump around onto various surfaces to see what sounds quieter. Then again, after a while, the steady drone of an air pump can become soothing in and of itself.

The Appreciation

Fish are underrated as companions and roommates. They don’t argue (except to perhaps beg for food), they don’t contradict you and they don't say nasty things about your mother behind your back. One of the joys of owning a home aquarium is the delight in seeing that your fish recognize you.

They often do unique behaviors just for you as opposed to any other human that happens to be around. These behavior can include rising to the top of the water and kissing the surface as if mimicking eating, following you about (as best as they can), or even darting about the tank. Although it can't be proven that fish feel happiness, it certainly looks like they are happy to see you.

The Self-Confidence

Running a happy home aquarium takes planning, patience and some technical skill. You also need to devote some time every day just watching your wet pets to see if they are in good health. These are all skills that the average person just can't be bothered with learning. But seeing a healthy fish glide about like a living jewel because of your work is like looking at a painting you made. This can give you a lot of self-confidence that can carry over into other endeavors in your life that you plan to do.

freshwater aquarium plants

Freshwater Aquarium Plants Beautify The Background

An aquarium can be a beautiful addition to a home or office, and freshwater aquarium plants can beautify the environment of the fish that everyone loves to watch. The freshwater aquarium plants are available for those who choose an aquarium as part of the décor. People often choose a freshwater aquarium because these are often easier to care for than others. The aquarium plants are also relatively easy to obtain and care for by a conscientious person. Adults and children alike will enjoy the addition of a fish tank filled with magnificent fish swimming through freshwater aquarium plants.

The freshwater aquarium plants can form the environment for a number of different types of aquarium fish. People who study guidelines for a freshwater aquarium should be able to maintain a beautiful fish tank for many years. There are directions for maintaining the fish that love to swim through fresh water in a tank. There are tales of people who lose the fish and the aquarium plants almost immediately. These unfortunate people end up spending too much money when they lose their fish and the freshwater aquarium plants in their environment. Dead fish and sagging freshwater aquarium plants can be most discouraging.

Freshwater Aquarium Plants Thrive With Proper Care

People who choose a freshwater aquarium will want to choose the hardiest fish for this environment. When they have selected their tank and the fish, they will want to provide a beautiful background full of freshwater aquarium plants. The information on maintaining this investment is readily available, and it is constantly updated. The shop where the freshwater aquarium plants are purchased should provide directions for keeping the plants alive and well. Some plants like some fish are easier to care for than others. Some beautiful plants that will work well include Java Fern, Vallisneria and bunch plants.

The freshwater aquarium plants can be purchased separately, or a package of these plants can be purchased. The packages are carefully designed for a wonderful water wonderland. There are different types of aquarium plants, and all of these should be planted carefully according to the directions. People who are starting their first tank should look at some samples of the aquariums set up by other people. People will know which plants they would most like to have by checking out pictures of other aquariums. Freshwater aquarium plants cost money, and they do grow. Everyone should be careful that they do not spend too much money to end up with a tank that is too crowded with vegetation.

freshwater aquarium fish

The Advantages Of Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Although they are not as brightly colored as salt water fish nor as unusual as some species of brackish water fish, freshwater aquarium fish have many advantages over their more brilliant cousins. Freshwater aquarium fish are generally hardier, less expensive to take care of and they are usually farmed instead of harvested from the wild.

Hardier Soles

(Sorry for the pun. Soles are actually saltwater fish). Anyway, freshwater aquarium fish don’t need as specific requirements for their water chemistry in order to thrive. In contrast, brackish water fish need the salinity of their water constantly monitored, as does saltwater fish.

They also seem to be less stressed when any temperature or chemistry changes happen to their tanks, while other fish die for reasons that tend to mystify the average aquarist. Freshwater aquarium fish are ideal for the beginning hobbyist, while saltwater fish are recommended only for devoted and financially stable experts.

Less Expensive

Since they need less chemical treatments and less specialized equipment, freshwater aquarium fish are much less expensive to take care of than their brackish and saltwater cousins. You need to get very specific lighting, filtration and sump pump systems with most saltwater or brackish water fish. Freshwater aquarium fish are more flexible in their filtration requirements. They also can eat most commercially available fish food.

Environmentally Friendly

The pet fish trade has a bad record of keeping their stock alive, as far as saltwater fish are concerned. In the 1990's, this writer lived near one of the nation's largest importers of saltwater fish, That Fish Place of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Their fish were captured from the oceans, not captive-bred. Some of the species they had are now endangered, partially due to the demands of American hobbyists.

The mortality rate of a saltwater fish from ocean to just reaching the pet store is over 50%, according to conversations I've had with That Fish Place employees who wish to remain anonymous. In contrast, most species of freshwater aquariumfish that you find in pet stores are captive bred. So buying them does not support depleting rapidly diminishing wild stocks.

Some species are even domestic fish – so if they were ever released into the wild, they wouldn’t last too long. These species include all of the varieties of goldfish in pet stores and many freshwater fish tanks in homes and offices around the world. Before you get any fish, please do your research, but I think you'll come to the conclusion that freshwater aquarium fish are the best fish to keep.

corner aquarium

A Corner Aquarium Refreshes The Décor

A corner aquarium could be the most refreshing spot in a home or office. A corner aquarium could be the spot where family members or employees go to relax and retreat from the problems and pressures presented on a daily basis. The corner aquarium solves some of the dilemmas presented to those who want an aquarium but do not have the perfect place to put one. A corner aquarium does not take up the space of others. A corner aquarium can be placed in an area that is often just empty space because nothing else quite fits. Many people just enjoy the sight of graceful fish swimming in the crystal clear water of a luxurious aquarium. People who thought they did not have room for an aquarium before should consider the corners for a lively addition.

Every room has at least four corners, and there are not many pieces that fit neatly into a corner. Most chairs do not quite fit, and many decorators fill up the corners with plants. The plants work well for many rooms because they go with many different interior designs, but think about a corner aquarium that will fill up the same space with the glorious movement of beautiful fish. A corner aquarium can be filled with the colors of different types of marine life including fish and plants. The sounds and sights of a corner aquarium can be the perfect solution to every empty corner.

A Corner Aquarium Adds Life To Homes And Offices

There are some magnificent corner aquariums available to fit the décor of any home or office. The available aquariums are appropriate for freshwater or saltwater fish. Many people first choose freshwater aquariums because these are the easiest to maintain, but people can start with a freshwater aquarium in their corner and change to a saltwater aquarium later using the same tanks. These aquariums are available in tanks that can be placed on a stand specially designed to fit perfectly into a corner.

A corner aquarium can liven up the empty space of any corner, and these tanks come with the lights and other equipment that add to their enchanting appearance. The corner placement also means that the aquarium is viewed from many different positions in the room. Office workers might enjoy glimpsing magnificent fish swimming peacefully in the corner from many different angles of a busy office. The corners of many homes might be brightened with colorful fish and plants in an aquarium placed strategically in previously empty corners.

cloudy aquarium water

Clearing Up Cloudy Aquarium Water

Having an aquarium full of tropical fish is a great hobby and it is a great addition to any home. However, once in a while you will have cloudy aquarium water. There are several reasons why one would have cloudy aquarium water in their tank. One of the best ways to clear up this cloudy water is to understand why it is cloudy. Knowing the reason will help one clear up the cloudy aquarium water.

The Forecast Calls For Cloudy Aquarium Water

There are several reasons why an aquarium would get cloudy water. When this happens, one has to look closely at the cloudy water to determine the cause of it. If the water is a green cloud, this means that there is too much algae in the tank. This usually occurs because of overfeed and overuse of the light. To eliminate the green cloud, one should clean the gravel and filter more often, then lower the amount of food the fish is given on a daily basis and turn off the light for awhile.

White tinted cloudy aquarium water indicates the growth of bacteria in the tank. This can occur when you first set up the tank, or when you add new fish or decorations. The best way to clean this type of cloud is to filter the gravel frequently, wash the decorations and change the filter. The white cloudy aquarium water should clear up soon.

Adding The Additives

If none of the above suggestions work, then you can go to the local pet store and buy a special additive that you can add to the water to clear up the cloudy aquarium water. Sometimes these chemicals work, and other times they don’t. It all depends on what is making your water cloudy. If you do not removed the source of the cloudiness from the water the cloudy aquarium water will simply return over and over again. Therefore, make sure you know what is causing your cloudy aquarium water before deciding to add the additives.

Understand what is making your aquarium water cloudy is the first step in understanding how to clean it up. If you try these steps and the cloudiness still does not clear up, you may want to seek advice from a fish expert at your local pet store. Cloudiness may not be dangerous to your fish in the beginning. However, if it is left untreated it could possible grow into a fatal problem.

aquarium tanks

Types Of Aquariums And Tanks: How To Know The Difference

Fish help us relax and they teach us many things about the underwater world. An aquarium or tank in your home is a beautiful addition. It brings aquatic beauty to any room in your house. From the smallest fish bowls to the most elaborate saltwater fish aquariums, aquariums and tanks are one of the best attention getters when you have visitors over for any occasion. There are many different types of aquariums and tanks that you can choose for your fish. Knowing the difference between them will help you to choose the best tank or aquarium.

The Acrylic Aquariums And Tanks

There are many different types of fish tanks available. However, the acrylic aquarium or tank is one of the best because it is the clearest, lightest and strongest aquarium available. They are a little expensive, but worth the extra money. The acrylic aquariums and tanks have nicely rounded corners and they do not have silicone holding them together like a glass aquarium does. You and your guest will have a better view of your underwater beauties with an acrylic aquarium.

Regular Fish Homes

The regular fish aquariums and tanks are also okay to use if you cannot afford an acrylic aquarium. The typical tank is made of glass and is bonded at the corners through the use of silicone. Although, the silicone is strong and will usually last a long time, it still has the possibility of leaking. Most regular fish tanks and aquariums only come in the typical square or rectangular shaped patterns. They are made of glass and it is harder to form glass into odd shapes. Glass tanks and aquariums are more affordable and do make nice homes for your fish.

The Old Fashion Fish Bowl

There are many other smaller types of aquariums. For example, many people like to put a beta fish into a glass flower bowl and set it on their desk. The old fashion round goldfish bowls still exist and are also popular desktop or classroom fish. Many stores will also carry specialized fish aquariums for apartments or other small spaces. There are also tanks that can be built into walls, cars or other odd places. The possibilities of fish tanks and aquariums today are endless. No matter what type of aquarium you buy, you will surely have hours of relaxing enjoyment as you watch your fish swim gracefully through the water all day long.

aquarium supplies

Essential Aquarium Supplies For Goldfish

You really shouldn’t keep goldfish in a bowl. It is much too small to keep them alive for any length of time. Bowls also need daily maintenance, as the water gets smelly fast. I know you always hear the story about the goldfish that lived for thirty years in a gallon bowl, but that is the exception than the rule. Before you get your goldfish, you need to get these essential aquarium supplies.

The Tank

This might seem obvious for a list of essential aquarium supplies, but some people need practical advice. Get a new tank or a tank that only housed fish successfully in the past. For example, I took on my Dad's 20 gallon goldfish tank a couple of years after the last fish died. My five goldfish are currently thriving in it.

Get the biggest tank you can afford that your floor will also be able to carry. My goldfish tank is in the basement because of its incredible weight. Also, my bedroom is in the basement, so it works out all right. Bigger tanks require much less overall maintenance than smaller tanks.

The Filter

Another essential aquarium supply is your filtration system. These have come a long way in the last decade. They are easier to maintain and less messy than the filtration systems of the past. I recommend for goldfish what's called a biological filtration system. They usually hang over the side of the tank. Add extra filter cartridges to your list of essential aquarium supplies.

The Air Pump

You need some sort of water agitation system for your essential aquarium supplies. This includes incredibly inexpensive air hose, various air stones (also called "bubble stones") and the all-important air pump. When you can, get at least two in case the one air pump dies on you.

Thermometer

Although goldfish are classified as cold water fish, they prefer a constant water temperature of about 68 degrees Farenheight. You need to know how hot or cold the water is in order to keep your fish at optimum health. An inexpensive but necessary aquarium supply is a tank thermometer. There are ones you can stick on the outside or inside of the tank.
Electrical Outlet Strip

This might seem like a strange item to add to a list of essential aquarium supplies, but it makes life for you and your fish a lot easier. A tank needs several electrical outlets, and having a strip to plug them in saves you a lot of time trying to figure out what wire goes to what home appliance.

aquarium stands

Holding The World: Aquarium Stands

When putting together an aquarium, most owners focus on what is inside the tank. The tank itself, regardless of size, will be filled with water, plants, fish and decorations. Rocks will line the bottom and lights and filtration systems will keep it operating smoothly and keep the ocean life happy. Chemicals will be added to balance the pH and to destroy any unhealthy bacteria or algae. However, the tank itself is the world. It contains the fragile ecosystem of the aquarium and protects it from the outside world. And the tank deserves the very best treatment, treatment possible only with the use of aquarium stands.

On A Pedestal

Aquarium stands play a vital role in the hobby of fish keeping. Stands are made from a variety of materials, contain different décor patterns and can be decorated to fit any atmosphere. However, the stands do more than help the owner create the perfect aquarium set-up. They protect the tank itself, and allow it to truly be appreciated. Many beginners put their tanks on the floor or on pre-existing tables. This interferes with viewing, but it also puts the aquarium at risk. Aquarium stands are often afterthoughts, as owners do not even think about this equipment while they are shopping for tanks and fish. They try to find a stand after the fact. However, if the tank and stand is purchased at the same time, not only is guaranteed to be the right size for the weight and dimensions of the tank, it will probably cost less than when purchased alone.

Aquarium stands come in two main styles, stands and cabinets. A stand is a four-legged piece of furniture perfect for smaller tanks. Beginners will usually go with this type of stand since it is cheaper and simpler to set up, but if the tank is too large or heavy, a four-legged stand will not provide enough support. Cabinets provide more stability and also offer storage. For style, the stand should coordinate with the trim and frame on the tank, and in the end, height is the most important factor to consider. The tank in the end should be visible to the most amounts of people possible.

Aquarium stands can be made from wood, wood byproducts or metal. Metal is the chosen material of most cheap stands, usually iron or steel. Metal is not a good choice for saltwater tanks as it can rust, and while the stands are cheap they offer the least amount of support and do not come in cabinet styles. Wood and wood byproduct aquarium stands offer more support and can come in cabinets. However, wood is still the optimal choice, as pressed board or fiberboard stands can swell and weaken if they are drilled improperly.

aquarium snails

Add Personality To Your Aquarium With Snails

Have you ever seen the giant aquarium at the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas? Go deep into the mall past the Red Piano gift shop, past the Coliseum where Elton John, Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Cher perform. Keep going, past the slot machines, the blackjack tables and the poker room.

Deep under the ground, where the interior lights grow dim, you will start to notice a spectacular, enormous aquarium. Thousands of colorful fish draw the eye. And if you look very carefully on the floor of the aquarium, or perhaps climbing on one of the rocks or walls, you will see the aquarium snails, working their way through the environment, cleaning up dead plants and animals as they go.

Spot The Snail

Playing spot the snail is a fun game whenever you visit a home or mall where there is an aquarium, like at Caesar's Palace. Snails like to hide, so they often place themselves in the shadows or behind rocks. Their shells provide camouflage, making them even harder to spot than ever.

The head of the snail is easy to spot because of its two eyebrow-like tentacles. The tentacles can extend and retreat, and the eyes are located at the base of each one. Snails have tongues that they use to eat the dead matter that forms the basis of their diet.

Gilled Aquarium Snails – Prosobranchs

The kind of snail most commonly found in an aquarium is a gilled snail. These snails reproduce freely, and they will quickly populate an empty aquarium. Snails with gills are hermaphroditic, which makes it easy for them to reproduce. Some species of aquarium snail change sex to reproduce; others fertilize their own eggs, and other cross-fertilize. Gelatin masses filled with eggs lie under submerged rocks and plants until they hatch.

Red ramshorn aquarium snails are also commonly found. Red shells are the most highly desired. Brown ones are not rare at all.

Population Control

Overpopulation of aquarium snails can be a problem. Snails are good when they are keeping the aquarium gravel clean, but they can soon overpopulate and become a problem in the aquarium.

The easiest way to keep the tank free of unwanted aquarium snails is to use Botias, also known as loaches. These fish will feast on the gilled snails, and your overpopulation problem will soon be over. If you have other fish, don't give in to the temptation use water dogs to clear out snails. The water dogs will eat the fish in no time.

aquarium sizes

Available Space Dictates Aquarium Sizes

Aquariums are great pieces to add to the décor of a home or office, but aquarium sizes vary greatly. Each decorator whether amateur or professional needs to think about aquarium sizes when planning for the addition. The aquarium size in a corner space could be quite large depending on the other furniture pieces near this space. Aquarium sizes in a large office could be quite huge, and the number of fish possible depends on the aquarium size possible in that particular office. Aquarium sizes for a small bedroom would have to be considered in order to leave plenty of room for other activities.

Aquarium sizes are very important for several reasons, and each shopper should consider several factors before bringing one home. People interested in an aquarium need to consider the materials used in the construction of the aquarium. Most aquariums are made of glass or acrylic, and the acrylic aquariums usually weigh less than the glass. Some aquariums are available in a three gallon size, and for those with lots of space, there is a one ton model when filled. Each aquarium increases tremendously in weight once it is filled with water.

Aquarium Sizes Determine The Population

The size of an aquarium will determine which fish will survive in each tank, and the aquarium size will eliminate buying other types of fish. Some people buy their first aquarium without thorough research, and they end up with many dead fish or plants. In order to avoid disappointment, people need to consider many factors when purchasing a wonderful aquarium. A small aquarium is probably the best for beginners, and there are some wonderful tanks that will be perfect for a bedroom, a classroom or a small office. The latest designs include some that are especially made for novices. Beginners should seek out the designs that are easiest to maintain.

There are some great aquariums that are easy to set up, and there are many aquariums designed with a very efficient system for maintaining the environment for the fish and plants. A beginner following all of the directions should be able to maintain a wonderful aquarium with little stress and strain. The best designs are made so the owners do not have to connect tubes and other parts to get started. An aquarium can be a wonderful addition in homes and offices, and the latest designs make the addition of an aquarium easy to accomplish. Research studies have shown that a beautiful aquarium can provide a very soothing, stimulating element in a hectic office or household.

aquarium problems

Handling Aquarium Problems

Aquariums are masterful centerpieces in the homes and offices where they are displayed. Natural home accessories are all the rage, and nothing is more natural than a tank full of water and live fish. Unfortunately, there are a few aquarium problems that you need to be on the lookout for. If you are aware of these aquarium problems and deal with them early, you can prevent them from becoming serious problems that may make your fish sick or even kill them.

Too Many Snails

Thanks to the hermaphroditic nature of snails, very few aquariums have just one snail. They reproduce more prolifically than rabbits, because they can fertilize their own eggs, have sex with themselves and otherwise reproduce frequently keeping the snail population alive and well.

Some snails are desirable. They keep aquarium problems at a minimum by feeding on dead and decaying animal and vegetable material. When their numbers grow too great snails are usually dealt with by adding Botilias, or loaches, to the environment. The loaches eat the snails, keeping them from taking over the aquarium.

Algae

Algae are the bane of the aquarium enthusiast's existence. Aquarium owners are expected to know how to treat brown slime algae, blue-green algae, brown algae, green water and hair algae. Fortunately, algae treatments are all based on algae-reduction technologists that have been with us for centuries. Bodies of water lacking in ammonia result in brown-slime algae, cloudy water results in blue-green algae and nitrates and nitrites, respectively, cause green water and hair algae aquarium problems.

Clean Aquarium Basics

Every aquarium owner can avoid the most common aquarium problems by keeping up with simple aquarium basics, like regular maintenance.

Overfeeding

Overfeeding fish is one of the biggest problems beginners have, and it can lead to an imbalance in the nutrients in the tank. Fish will overfeed and, more importantly, the dead and decaying fish food will drift down and settle in the gravel at the bottom of the tank. It needs to be cleaned regularly, with well-managed snails, to keep from getting out of hand.

Chemical Imbalances

Beware of new tank syndrome, where fish mysteriously die while the aquarium owner adjusts the levels of ammonia and nitrite in the tank. Stocking the tank slowly and giving the environment time to adjust to changes can minimize the effects of aquarium problems.

Most home aquarium owners turn to a product like Algone to treat the water in their fish tank. Algone can prevent new tank syndrome and will not interfere with any female's reproductive system.

aquarium plants

Life-Like Living With Aquarium Plants

When it comes to a home aquarium, most owners focus on the fish. Whether it is a salt-water or fresh-water tank, the fish quickly become the pride and joy. Trips to the store to select a new colorful friend, research on which fish can and cannot live together, fish food and filtration and all of the other necessary life-sustaining aquarium products. One way to really liven up your tank is through the addition of some aquarium plants. Sure, they may be green and rather stringy, more like seaweed than any beautiful outdoor flower. They may even give the appearance of dirtying the water. Many owners focused on the beauty of their fish overlook the plants. But in the end, the fish rely on aquarium plants as much as they rely on food and a beautiful, healthy aquarium tank requires a good variety of life-giving plants.

A Plant For Every Need

Live plants help to ensure the proper balance of water, chemicals and elements in any aquarium tank. A properly chosen, planted and cared for variety of plants beautifies the aquarium, increases the health of the fish and even gives joy to the owner. Selecting aquarium plants and arranging them can be as enjoyable as purchasing new fish. Plants come in a variety of shapes, textures and sizes, and while there are limits based on the size of the tank and the pre-existing plants, most owners can truly experiment with aquarium plants and discover the perfect arrangement.

But in the end, aquarium plants exist foremost for the fish not the owners. Happy fish are fish that feel at home, and in an aquarium only plants are going to give the appearance of nature. Plants help the aquarium mimic the ocean floor and they help filter light and filter water, giving fish places to hide and helping them to believe they are swimming through the various ocean levels. Aquarium plants also provide natural filtration, as they eliminate the need for many fish care products and external chemicals, including pH adjustments and ammonia absorption resins.

Oxygenators specifically are some of the most important aquarium plants. Growing completely under water, these plants release oxygen directly into the water. They also offer numerous other benefits such as helping to balance the chemistry of the water by softening it, and help to maintain proper pH balance, a necessary concern for the survival of fish. Elodea is one of the most popular oxygenating aquarium plants. Dark green leaves, arranged around a narrow stem, help to indicate the quality of the water in the tank. The leaves will become covered in calcium deposits if the water is too hard.

aquarium overflow box

What The Heck Is An Aquarium Overflow Box?

Also known as siphon boxes or prefilters, an aquarium overflow box helps keep your air pump and filters working by making sure they won't be damaged by any power outages. If you have a goldfish aquarium of less than 40 gallons or if your tank has been thriving for years AND you have working spare filters and air pumps, then you don’t have to worry about adding on an aquarium overflow box.

Mainly For Salt Water Wet Pets

Aquarium overflow boxes are used mostly by professional aquariums and hard-core aquarium hobbyists as insurance for their expensive and vital equipment. If the power goes out, then water can back up to short circuit the air pump or the filtration unit. Some people make their own aquarium overflow boxes but there are also ready made ones.

Power outages can also lead to your tank suddenly overflowing. If your tank is not on the ground floor level of your home and it is more than ten gallons, then you should really consider some kind of aquarium overflow box. A filled tank with gravel or sand and ornaments weights hundreds of pounds.

How To Tell If You Really Need One

Most salt water tanks will have some kind of sump pump that are far stronger than for a freshwater tank. When it's on, the water is kept level because it's moving around all of the time. But when the power goes out, the water has nowhere to go except into the tank and onto your floor unless you have an aquarium overflow box.

Get a lot of old towels and newspapers around the floor of your tank, because things might get wet. Get a bucket and a coffee can to bail if need be. If you can, arrange for a friend to turn the power on and off while you are there at the tank. Turn off the power. If the water level suddenly rises more than one inch – or if you have a suddenly saturated floor – then you know you need an aquarium overflow box.

Going Shopping

Aquarium overflow boxes are available at many pet stores and aquarium specialty stores and their online equivalents. There are ones specially made for large freshwater aquariums, so be sure you have one for fresh or salt water for whatever tank you have. They vary in prices (like everything else) from under $50 (US) to $200 (US). Most work with a gravity flow system so you don’t need to break out a drill.

aquarium of the pacific

Visit The Aquarium Of The Pacific Virtually

The odds are, a lot of people who want to visit Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California will not be able to due to financial reasons. Then again, some people might be turned off by the crowds, the parking, the standing in lines and everything else involved in visiting a major marine attraction. But you don’t have to be permanently shut out from the Aquarium of the Pacific's doors. You can visit them online and get a virtual tour and updates.

An Ode To A Box Of Squid

I wish I'd made that title up, but that's the title of one of the blog posts on the Aquarium of the Pacific's website, where you can learn everything wanted and didn’t want to know about the workings of the aquarium and how the critters are doing. You can also find out that the aquarium workers write some really bad poetry. It's a good thing they don’t plan on quitting their day jobs anytime soon.

The blogs on the Aquarium of the Pacific's website are written by several workers and volunteers who help out at the aquarium on a daily basis. The blog posts are sorted into easy to figure out categories on a bright, easy to navigate site with plenty to read about. There are posts on individual animals, upcoming aquarium events, conservation tips and a look into the tech toys used to keep the gigantic tanks running.

What Critters Are There?

Although you can expect to hear about fish, sharks and octopi (that's the official plural of octopus), the Aquarium of the Pacific also has other critters that you might be interested in. For example, they have a lot of birds – fifty species, to be exact. They also have over twenty species of marine mammals from seas to sea otters. Many reptiles also call the Aquarium of the Pacific their home.

But, if you want fish, you got 'em – there are over 450 species living at the Aquarium of the Pacific. One of the most popular creatures living there is the Giant Pacific Octopus, who lives in the Northern Pacific exhibit. There are also crabs, lobster, shrimp, jellyfish and live coral. All in all, there are usually over 12,500 critters at the Aquarium of the Pacific at any given time.

If I ever get to go, I'd surely take advantage of the whale watching program they have. Since they are right on the ocean, whale watching tours leave almost daily. You do have to check the website for the most current details.

aquarium lighting

Shedding A Light On Aquarium Lighting

In an aquarium tank, there are numerous elements that must mesh together perfectly for life to be sustained. Nature itself is immaculate, indescribable and in trying to replicate it the same precautions must be taken that have evolved on the planet through the millennia. An aquarium is a life-like ocean, self-sustaining, interconnected ecosystem of water, fish and plants. It is complicated and it is fragile, but in the end, one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is not that complicated or that fragile at all. Just like humanity is dependent on the sun, so are the smallest fish and the simplest plants. In an aquarium, the sun must be mimicked or else life will fail. For this reason, aquarium lighting is essential in any tank, whether salt-water or fresh-water, regardless of how many fish or plants are contained within it. Any aquarium owner must educate him or her self on the type of aquarium lighting available, and how best to use it to bring about optimal results.

Lighting The Way

For plants, photosynthesis is the process of life, and light begins that process. Plants are able to transform light into energy, resulting in the creation of oxygen as a byproduct, a crucial element in any aquarium. However, algae species rely on light too, and in a tank algae is the enemy. An aquarium becomes a delicate balance of plants, nutrients, light and carbon dioxide. If the balance is off too much algae will grow or the plants and fish life will be unable to thrive. Aquarium lighting is measured in everything from watts to Kelvin, each measurement referring to a different type of energy output. However, each of these measurements is essential to balancing the aquarium lighting perfectly.

However, some tanks are fish-only tanks, and therefore, the aquarium lighting needs to focus solely on the fish. The specific requirements of plant life will not factor into this arrangement. This type of aquarium lighting is often sold in packages for beginners. The package comes complete with lights, bulbs and attachments. However, these packages are usually designed for beginner fish such as guppies and goldfish. Advanced fish life will still require advanced aquarium lighting. With specialized bulbs, these lighting systems are rather self-sufficient. Hoods help to concentrate the light on specific spectrums, and in the end the natural day-night cycle of light can be replicated in any aquarium. Specific bulbs can also be substituted in to change the color of the light. While these do not directly affect the fish, they help to alter the color of the aquarium environment bringing out the beauty of the fish and pleasing the onlooker.

aquarium heaters

Everything You Need To Know About Aquarium Heaters

There are a lot of things to know about aquariums when setting one up. One of the most important elements of the aquarium set up is the aquarium heater. This is a small device that hangs on the side of aquarium and controls the warmth of the water. Different types of fish require different water temperatures. Therefore, it is vitally important that you set up your heater correctly so that your fish remain comfortable at all times.

Why Are Aquarium Heaters So Important?

Every aquarium will need to have an aquarium heater. The reason is because most tropical fish are cold-blooded animals. This means that they are not able to control their body temperature and they depend on the heater to warm their body and keep them from freezing to death. Not all fish require the same temperature from the aquarium heater. Therefore, when you are buying your fish, you need to make sure you are buying fish that can live together in the same climate as your aquarium. Without an aquarium heater, your fish will die.

How Do I Know What Type Of Heater To Buy?

It all depends on the size and type of your aquarium and the type of fish you plan on purchasing. There are three basic types of heaters available. There is the aquarium heater that simply hangs on the side of the tank. The hanging types of heaters are the most basic heating unit and are okay for use in smaller aquariums.

There is also a submersible type of aquarium heater. This is the type of aquarium heater that is dropped into the water completely to heat and warm the aquarium. These are more convenient and more reliable that a heater that hangs on the side of the tank because it provides more consistent heat for the fish.

The heating cable system is also used and is commonly used in aquariums with live plants. This is the best aquarium heater because it provides continuous, even heat throughout the aquarium. It cost more money, but is a better heater than the other two types of aquarium heaters.

An aquarium heater is one of the most important elements to add to an aquarium. Since your fish are probably cold blooded, they will need the heat to maintain a livable and comfortable body temperature. Without a heater, they will die. It is best to ask your local pet store representative which type of aquarium heater is best for your particular situation. Most tropical fish require a minimum temperature of 84 degrees. So, the type of heater you will need will depend on your type of fish, the type of aquarium and the type of plants you have in your tank.

aquarium fish species

Aquarium Angelfish Species

No aquarium is complete without at least one Angelfish. There are more than twenty varieties of aquarium Angelfish species. Any one of them will add color and drama to your home or office aquarium.

Varieties of Angelfish

One of the most popular aquarium fish species is the dwarf Angelfish. Because of its small size, the dwarf Angelfish is perfect for a small home aquarium. The Coral beauty Angelfish has a red body with bluish-black and orange fins. It will grow to a maximum size of four inches, and is easy to care for. The Eibli Angelfish grows to a length of six inches. It has a tan body with vertical brown stripes and very distinctive black blotches that cover the entirety of the back of the fish. The Flame Angelfish can safely live in a reef tank. This dwarf aquarium Angelfish species is six inches long and has an orange-red body with black strips running from top to bottom.

The Orange-black Angelfish is another popular aquarium fish species. This three-inch long, dark blue fish has a golden blaze that runs from the face down the dorsal fin. The half-black Angelfish is a difficult aquarium fish species to care for. This fish comes in colors of grayscale, except for its eye, which has a vivid orange accent.

Herald's Angelfish is four inches long and is a buttery lemon yellow, with a brown accent at the eye. The Lemonpeel Angelfish is another difficult fish to raise and care for. Like Herald's Angelfish, the Lemonpeel Angelfish is bright yellow with a dark semicircle near the eye.

Barred Angelfish is only four inches long, with black and white vertical strips extending from head to tail. The Barred Angelfish is also difficult to care for. Potter's Angelfish is yet another difficult aquarium fish species to own. It is a beautiful fish, with a blue body and reddish fins.

The Pygmy, or Cherub, Angelfish is slightly easier to keep. This blue-bodied fish has an orange yellow head and grows to a length of three inches. And the Rusty Angelfish lives easily among coral reefs. Four inches long, it has a tan body with dark spots and red near the rear.

Omnivorous Fish Species

All dwarf Angelfish are omnivores, eating both animals and vegetables. Macro-algae are their vegetable matter of choice. Other than the Flame Angelfish, Dwarf Angelfish are not considered safe around reefs. Add them at your own risk if you have a reef tank. However, if you have an ordinary aquarium fish tank, Dwarf Angelfish will thrive in their environment and provide you with many enjoyable hours of fish watching.

aquarium fish diseases

Aquarium Fish Diseases And The Treatments

Aquariums are wonderful additions to any home. The colorful fish are beautiful and very relaxing to watch in their underwater world. However, fish are like other animals. They will get aquarium fish diseases. Many of these diseases can be avoided or prevented. However, there are treatments available for each disease. These treatments are usually effective if the disease is noticed and diagnosed in its early stages. Here are some of the most common aquarium fish diseases and their treatments.

New Tank Syndrome

New tank syndrome is an aquarium fish disease that usually occurs when you add new fish to your aquarium. This is when your new fish die within a few hours of being added to your tank. There are no signs of illness or disease, and the fish will just die. One of the best ways to prevent this is to float the fish before adding them to the tank. When you buy fish, they are sent home in a plastic bag or cup. Simply put this plastic bag or cup into the water and let it float for a couple of hours before letting the fish go into the aquarium. The main cause of new tank syndrome is stress.

Fin Rot

Fin rot is also a common aquarium fish disease. Fin rot is very noticeable because the fins and other soft tissues of the fish become fray and broken. It may appear as if other fish are eating at their fins. There is medication for the aquarium fish disease. It is sold in most pet stores and you should use this medication at the first sign of fin rot. Untreated fin rot will lead to other more serious infections.

Gill Worms

Another aquarium fish disease is gill worms. This is a condition where the fish will appear to have worms hanging from its gills. Many times the fish will look as if it is gasping for air when they have gill worms. This is because the gill worms are blocking air from circulating through their gills. There are anti-parasite medications for this aquarium fish disease. Heavy use of an air pump may also help comfort the fish and help him get rid of the gill worms.

Ick

Ick is a fungus that grows on the skin of the fish. It has a cotton type of appearance. An unclean tank usually causes Ick. It is usually treated with antifungal medication or a salt bath. It is very important that you treat Ick at its first site because it is highly contagious and will spread to other fish in the aquarium.

aquarium fish

The Easiest Aquarium Fish To Take Care Of

No aquarium fish is maintenance free – but some fish are easier to take care of than others. These are fish that are best for beginning aquatic hobbyists, as they are tougher in health and more forgiving of any mistakes the beginner is bound to make. The easiest aquarium fish to take care of are all freshwater fish. They are the Beta, the common goldfish and the plecostomus.

Bettas

The Betta (also known as the Siamese Fighting Fish) is arguably one of the easiest aquarium fish to care for as well as being one of the most beautiful. He has a robust physical constitution and has been known to live in small bowls successfully, unlike other fish. He also produces less waste than goldfish.

However, he is a pugnacious fellow and often fights with other fish. He will kill another male Betta because he was bred to compete in fish fights. Female Bettas are much more social with other tropical fish, but they are drabber in color and have much shorter fins. They can eat the same foods as other tropical fish, with a particular attraction to bloodworms.

Common Goldfish

Many hobbyists argue that the common goldfish (and its close relation, the Comet Goldfish) are the easiest aquarium fish to take care of. They also are far more social than Bettas and come in brilliant colors. They do not require special diets and can tolerate just about any ornament you care to plop into a tank.

Egg-shaped goldfish that swim slowly, have bubble-eyes, no top fin or incredibly long fins are NOT considered easy to care for and also should not live in a tank with Common or Comet Goldfish. They swim so fast that the fan-tailed or egg-shaped goldfish will never be able to get their fair share of food.

The Plecostomus

The name "plecostomus" refers to a family of aquarium fish that has hundreds of varieties. Some are harder to take care of than others. But any plecostumus you find in your local pet shop among other tropical fish should be all right. They are bottom feeders like catfish or Chinese Algae Eaters and need their own kind of food.

However, they are hardy and tolerate swings in water chemistry more than most other kinds of aquarium fish. The only problem is that occasionally they outgrow the tank they are in. This happens unpredictably and it is not known why some grow so much bigger than others.

aquarium filters

Aquarium Filters Maintain Healthy Fish And Plants

The soft sound of an aquarium filter adds to the serenity of the lovely fish swimming in the tank. Watching fish swim leisurely in the crystal clear water of an aquarium can be very calming to the members of a household or the employees in an office. The waiting room of a busy medical center can be stressful, but a beautiful aquarium can take away the strain. Many people would love to place a great aquarium in the lobby of their office or their family room at home, but they worry about caring for the aquarium along with the fish and plants. A good aquarium filter can make a significant difference in the appearance of the aquarium and the life of its inhabitants.

An aquarium filter can save time and energy while keeping a beautiful aquarium clean and lovely. Without a filter, an aquarium owner would have to empty the tank and refresh the water every couple of days. This might mean that the contents of the aquarium would have to be removed to a safe place while the cleaning job was accomplished. This task could be very messy and time consuming. Without a good aquarium filter, it is difficult to imagine keeping an aquarium in a home or office.

Aquarium Filters Save Time And Energy

The quality of the water in an aquarium makes a significant difference to the health of the fish and plants. Buying these fish and plants can be a great expense, and no aquarium owner wants to lose the fish and plants for any reason. One of the reasons that aquarium owners lose the contents of their tanks is the quality of the air and water. A good aquarium filter can provide the optimum conditions for sustaining the life of all of the fish, the plants and their environment.

An effective aquarium filter maintains an aquarium in different ways. A good filter works to remove the waste from the inside of the aquarium. It also removes different types of debris from the tank. Different filters use some kind of screen or sponge to accomplish this task. A good filter also removes any kind of chemical build up that might be in the tank. A good filter removes or treats any undesirable biological material that is in the tank. There are different types of materials used in an aquarium filter, and all of these can be most useful for an owner dedicated to the care of some wonderful fish.

aquarium driftwood

Tank Décor And Aquarium Driftwood

Decorating your fish tank is just as important as any other aspect of aquarium life. To find the right things to decorate your tank with, take into consideration the décor of your room as well as the types of fish you will be housing. A piece of aquarium driftwood will make you tank shine and add depth to the whole setting.

Choosing Driftwood

Aquarium driftwood is not for all tanks. Aquarium driftwood is mainly for freshwater tanks. Some types of freshwater fish even like to have a snack on aquarium driftwood once in awhile. Aquarium driftwood is not for saltwater tanks or for reptiles. If you try to use it in a reptile tank, it could harm your pet.

You can easily find aquarium driftwood at your local pet store. As long as they sell aquarium supplies, they will usually sell aquarium driftwood. The next thing you will have to think about is the shape of aquarium driftwood that you want to buy. Driftwood comes in all shapes and sizes. What you need to consider when choosing driftwood is the size of the tank and the size of your fish. If you have smaller fish, you can buy a piece of driftwood with holes in it so they can swim through or hide if they feel like it. You can also get aquarium driftwood without holes for larger fish to swim around.

Other shapes that driftwood can come in are as skinny as branches to as thick as small logs. It all depends on how you want to decorate your tank. Make sure that if you choose a large piece that you will limit other plants and decorations. Overcrowding a tank with a lot of decorations will not make for happy fish. Make sure you fish will have enough room to swim, hide and be happy.

Warning

If you want to get aquarium driftwood, make sure you buy it from a store that sells if specifically for fish tanks and aquariums. These pieces are treated with chemicals that will make it withstand your tank. Do not ever use real driftwood that you find outdoors for your fish tank. This kind of driftwood will rot in your tank and could be harmful for your fish.

If you think that your tank will benefit from a great piece of aquarium driftwood, check out your local pet dealer to find great pieces of the driftwood that are not only functional, but beautiful as well.

Aquarium Dividers

Aquarium Dividers Provide Many Possibilities

Aquariums are wonder places where the fish are magnificent and the plants are exotic. The decorations that can be added to an aquarium add to the magic. Many office managers have added an aquarium to their space because there is just something about an aquarium that provides a soothing atmosphere to all that surrounds it. The family decorator often wants to add an aquarium to the family room, and the children often love to have an aquarium to liven their rooms. Aquariums come in sizes to please all of these people, and the latest designs help everyone keep the inhabitants of every tank healthy and happy.

Aquarium dividers can be added to tanks of different sizes, and fish lovers use these dividers for different reasons. Even in a very small tank, there are aquarium dividers that can be placed in the tank to separate the fish for various reasons. These aquarium dividers can be used for breeding fish. Those who have some baby fish in need of protection can use a divider to take care of these youngsters until they can fend off attackers. The aquarium dividers are designed so the filter systems can continue to treat all areas of a divided tank.

Aquarium Dividers Protect And Display

Some aquarium dividers can be inserted in the form of a hanging basket into a tank to provide for breeding fish. Some of these aquarium dividers can have two or more sections depending on the needs of the one in charge of the breeding procedures. A hanging divider can be placed on the edge of the tank and still receive the benefit of the filtration system to keep all fish safe while involved in the breeding procedures. These same dividers can also be used to protect the baby fish once they appear. One of these dividers can also be used to isolate a rough fish from the rest.

Some aquarium dividers come in a pack to provide versatility. These dividers can be used as needed to protect young fish. More of these aquarium dividers can also be added to isolate aggressive fish from the more vulnerable fish. Injured fish can be kept from others while they hopefully heal. Some aquarium dividers are often used to separate male Bettas in a single tank. Two male Bettas in a single tank will fight and possibly injure each other. Other fish cannot live in peace with other breeds so a good divider will allow for their peaceful coexistence.

Aquarium Décor

Choosing The Right Aquarium Décor

One of the most enjoyable things about setting up an aquarium in one’s home is decorating the tank. When you walk through a pet store, you will notice that there are probably hundreds of different decorations for tanks. How do you know which one’s your fish will like? How do you know which ones to choose? Here are some ideas on how to set up your aquarium décor.

Rock And Roll

To begin, you must choose some gravel for the bottom of your aquarium. Gravel is an essential part of the aquarium décor. There are many different colors of gravel to choose from. The gravel color really does not matter because the colors will usually match most other decorations. Once you purchase the gravel, you should soak it in warm water to remove any dust before putting it into the fish tank.

Plants And Weeds

Many people like to add plants or weeds as part of the aquarium décor. These plants or weeds can be plastic or they can be live. Only choose a few plants or weeds for your tank because you do not want it to overwhelm the scenery. Above all, you will need to leave enough room for your fish to swim. So, just pick a few plants. Remember that live plants will require more care and maintenance that plastic plants.

The Background

Next, you will want to choose a background for you tank. Most pet stores usually have some really neat aquatic backgrounds available. Choose a background that will compliment your tank gravel or vice versa. The background is usually taped to the backside of the tank and adds extra beauty to the interior look and feel of the aquarium décor.

Odds And Ends

There are also a lot of odds and ends that you can to the aquarium décor. There are small ships that move with the air pumps, skulls, treasure chests, fish figures and more. Some of them light up, glow in the dark or rock back and forth with the motion of the water and air pumps. Some of them have small swim through that they fish love to play in. Remember, that you do not want to over stock your tank, so only choose a few odds and ends. You can always change them later. Odds and ends are a fun part of the aquarium décor.

When setting up your aquarium décor, the possibilities are endless. There are many unique, neat and beautiful structures and fixtures that you can add to your tank to give it a cool look. The main thing to remember is that the fish will need room to swim around. So don’t over decorate it. Keep it simple, and keep it nice. Your fish will love it, your guests will love it and above all, you will love it.

Aquarium Care

The Basics Of Aquarium Care

If you want to have fish in your home, you are a person that probably enjoys the beauty of nature. What you will need to know when having fish is basic aquarium care so that your fish will live long, happy lives. Most large aquariums will need little daily care because with the right equipment, the tank can in a sense take care of itself. But there are still some things as the owner that you can do in order to show proper aquarium care.

Feeding

Feeding your fish all depends on the type of fish you are keeping in your tank. Most of the common aquarium species will need to be fed between two and three times a day. To have good aquarium care, only feed enough food that can be consumed within a few minutes, otherwise the tank can get dirty faster. You do not want to overfeed your fish because this contributes to poor water quality and will eventually cause disease in your fish.

Lighting

Lighting is an important topic in aquarium care. The light of the aquarium should not be left on all the time unless you have live plants. Otherwise, only turn the light on when you are feeding or observing your fish. The tank light will not need to be on to keep your fish active. Natural light and other light from room lamps will be enough. Leaving the light on too long can cause an overgrowth of algae. A person who wants to have an easy time with their aquarium care can purchase a timer for the light.

Equipment

Make sure you are checking your aquarium equipment often so that it maintains proper function. If you check the equipment for any malfunctions, it may save time and energy to quickly resolve problems. Problems left uncared for will result in sick and dying fish.

Observing The Fish

Make sure to take a look at your fish everyday. Not only are they a calming, beautiful thing to look at, but also you need to make sure all of the fish look healthy and happy. If there is a problem with one of them, make sure to remove them from the rest in case it is a disease that is contagious.

Following these few simple steps for aquarium care will ensure you and your fish are enjoying each other. There is nothing better than having happy, healthy fish to observe in your home.

aquarium background

Making Your Fish Feel At Home With An Aquarium Background

Pets, just like humans, want to feel safe and comfortable in their surroundings. You can make this happen for your fish or other aquarium pets by using an aquarium background. They are fun, bright and can completely change the mood of a drab fish tank.

What Is A Background?

An aquarium background is just like adding the backdrop on the back wall on a stage set. It gives the feeling of depth and a three-dimensional setting. An aquarium background is attached to the back of the aquarium so that that when someone looks into it from the front, they do not see right through the whole tank to the other side. Instead, they see a beautiful color or underwater scene.

Types of Backgrounds

You can get an aquarium background in almost any scene or color imaginable. You can get a beautiful underwater ocean scene. You can choose from solid colors like black and different shades of blue. You can also get special scenes like the sharks from the Disney movie Finding Nemo. There are a plethora of options for you to choose from. And you can choose nearly anything you want. You can even get aquarium backgrounds custom made.

Aquarium backgrounds come in different sizes, and it is easy to buy one and cut it down to the proper size to fit your tank. You can also buy it precut to the precise size of your tank so you do not have to do any of the work.

Looking for an aquarium background for your fish tank? You can find them at nearly any pet supply store that sells fish and aquarium supplies. It is just a matter of choosing the right one for your tank.

How will you know that you have chosen the right aquarium background? Well, if you like looking at it, then it is the right one for you. The fish in your tank will not necessarily have an opinion about it, but it will help your fish feel a little more secure because the fish will not have people staring at them from all sides.

Aquarium backgrounds also can be used to set the mood or theme of the whole room in your house, if you choose. You can get one that will coordinate with your décor, or you can get one that will contrast, but whatever you choose, know that you are getting a quality, functional product.

Aquarium Air Pumps

Using Aquarium Air Pumps

When setting up a home aquarium, it is important that you properly set up the aquarium air pump. Without the aquarium air pump, the fish will not be able to breath and most would eventually die. Here are some of the essential things you should know about setting up an aquarium air pump.

The Need For An Aquarium Air Pump

Almost all aquariums will need an aquarium air pump. In most cases, the air pump pumps air through the tubes, into the water and through the filter. They provide the needed oxygen that most tropical, saltwater and freshwater fish need for survival. There are different types of air pumps. The type of aquarium you have and the number of fish you have in your tank will determine what type of aquarium air pump you should buy.

Air Stones And Bubble Wands

One of the easiest and most common aquarium air pumps are air stones and the bubble wands. These are ideal for smaller aquariums and tanks. With this system, one end is attached to tubing and air circulates through the tubing and into the water through the stone. This type of air pump circulates air while creating bubbles in the water.

Under Gravel Aquarium Air Pumps

The under gravel aquarium air pumps are those systems that are place under the gravel in the bottom of the tank. The air is pumped through tube and then up through the underwater gravel. This type air pump is better suited for larger aquariums or tanks. The under gravel air pump is nice because it is easy to hide inside of the aquarium and it gives it a more natural look.

How To Use An Aquarium Air Pump

The use of an aquarium air pump is really easy. You just follow the instructions that come with your air pump. Basically, you take out the air pump from the box, put it into the aquarium and start it. If the air pump attached to a filter, then you have to clean it frequently, because it gets very dirty. Make sure you read the directions closely when you have a new air pump. That is best way to learn to use it properly. If you have any product specific questions, most air pumps have a toll free number on their box that you can call, or you can simply ask your questions to the local pet store employee.

Aquarium

Common Mistakes To Avoid In Keeping An Aquarium

Aquariums look fabulous, can help you lower your blood pressure and provide a sense of accomplishment. But they can also raise your blood pressure if your fish keep floating on the surface of the water instead of happily among the waters. You can easily avoid the most common mistakes anyone (beginner or expert) can make when maintaining your aquarium.

Don’t Overstock

The biggest temptation in keeping an aquarium is to cram as many fish in there as possible. Resist! This will save you cleaning time, money and the fish's lives. Although pet stores commonly overstock their tanks, they tend to have double the filtration systems needed and the fish move out of the tank once they are sold. You can't do the same thing if you want to keep your fish alive.

The safest rule to follow is allot four gallons of your tank to each fish, assuming the fish are only an inch long each (excluding tail fins). The rule used to be one gallon per inch of fish, and that is still written in a lot of older aquarium care books, but it has since proved to be unreliable. Besides, your 20 gallon tank doesn't hold 20 gallons of water – there's also gravel, plants and decorations. So, in a twenty gallon tank, you can have at the most five fish.

Don't Overfeed

Although there are many scientists that claim aquarium fish are stupid, they all possess the intelligence enough to beg – and they are really good at it. But eating too much is just as bad for your fish as it is for you. And a fish that eats too much will be a fish that passes out a lot of waste. This can all play havoc with not only your filtration system, but the chemical composition of the tank water.

The general rule is not to feed more than your fish can eat in about three minutes. If they are bottom feeding fish or shy fish, then give it ten or fifteen minutes. This is something you learn by doing. It will seem like you are hardly feeding your fish at all (and the fish will agree) but they have tiny stomachs and need only a little bit of food.

Get The Biggest Tank You Can Afford

Another mistake is that people think smaller tanks and bowls are easier to take care of than larger tanks. Not so! Smaller tanks get dirty very fast and need daily maintenance. The bigger the tank (with the proper amount of fish in there) the less maintenance it needs.

All Glass Aquarium

Saltwater Fish And An All Glass Aquarium

If you love to go to aquariums and watch fish, maybe you should think about getting an aquarium of your own for you and your family to enjoy. If you want a large collection of saltwater fish for your home, you must start by getting an all glass aquarium.

The first thing you need to think about when purchasing fish is where you will put them. You will need to find a place in your home where you can put your all glass aquarium for your new saltwater fish. It needs to be a place where you can have access to electricity for an air pump, but also on a sturdy structure like an aquarium stand made specifically for an all glass aquarium. If you have young children, make sure there is not chance of the all glass aquarium falling from its place.

Filter System

Once you have your all glass aquarium where you want to display your fish, the next thing you will need to consider is a filter system for your tank. To choose a filter system, you will first need to know the size of your all glass aquarium. Then, you will need to take into consideration the types of fish you are wanting to house in the aquarium.

Other Supplies

There are many more supplies that your will need to take care of a tank of saltwater fish. You will need nets in order to catch the fish if you need to take them out of the tank. You will also need the proper food to feed the species of fish that you have chosen for your aquarium.

Once you get all of the necessary supplies, you can have a little fun with picking out the décor for the inside of your all glass aquarium. You can choose to get colors that coordinate with your fish, but if they like to hide may never notice them. Getting bright, vivid colors for the bottom rocks and other decorations will make you fish stand out in the tank. Making your fish visible will give you and your family hours of fun watching your saltwater fish swim around.

You and your family will love having an all glass aquarium in your home. If you fill it with saltwater or freshwater fish, you will get hours of enjoyment simply watching the fish swim by. There is nothing like having an aquarium in the home. You may just want to get rid of the television set!

Acrylic Aquarium

Why Choose An Acrylic Aquarium For Your Fish

Having an aquarium in your home is a nice addition. It brings aquatic beauty to any room in your house. From the smallest fish bowls to the most elaborate saltwater fish aquariums, aquariums are one of the best attention getters when you have visitors over for any occasion. Fish help you to relax and they teach us many things about the underwater world. One of the best types of aquariums to have in the home is the acrylic aquarium. Here are some reasons why you should consider an acrylic aquarium for your home.

The Difference Is Noticeable

There are many different types of aquariums on the market. However, the acrylic aquarium is one of the best because it is the clearest, lightest and strongest aquariums available. The acrylic aquariums have nicely rounded corners and they do not have silicone holding them together like a regular fish aquarium does. You and your guest will have a better view of your underwater beauties with an acrylic aquarium.

Acrylic Aquariums Are Ideal For Saltwater Fish

If you are considering a saltwater aquarium, then you should definitely consider an acrylic aquarium. Saltwater fish and their accessories are very colorful and bright. So you will want to display their colorful beauty. Their colors will stand out more in an acrylic aquarium because the view is much clearer than glass tanks. These aquariums are also stronger and will stand up to the wear and tear of the saltwater. Therefore, if you are considering a saltwater aquarium, then an acrylic aquarium is a necessity.

Versatility And Shape

Most regular fish tanks only come in typical square forms. This is because their corners are bound by silicone and it is very hard to shape glass. However, acrylic aquariums can come in all shapes and size. This makes them very versatile in any home. Acrylic is very flexible and can be formed into any shape or size. Therefore, if you want a very unique fish aquarium, then you should consider an acrylic aquarium.

Strength And Insulation

Acrylic aquariums are best known for their strength and insulation. A glass fish tank is made with silicone in its corners. However, the acrylic tank is a molecular weld and this will make for a better insulation. They are very strong and are less likely to break or leak water. They are at least ten times stronger than a regular fish tank. Therefore, if you are looking for a strong fish aquarium, then acrylic is the best option.
